Berlin Metropolitan School, 2019-2020
This year was special. Due to the pandemic, the city went into lockdown and schools moved to a distance learning model before student portraits could be taken (save for one second grade class). As a result, the project manager and I decided to have parents take photos of their children and email them to us instead. We gave simple parameters for capturing portraits, but chose to do very little editing and instead embrace the eclectic and homemade look that resulted from hundreds of camera-phone photos.
Berlin Bilingual School, 2019-2020
Like BMS above, Berlin Bilingual (my children’s school) also chose to use community-submitted portraits to create a “Yearbook in Quarantine”. This yearbook was really fun to put together — even though it felt like we had all been isolated from one another for months, the pages reflected a vibrant year of class trips and activities. It was nice to remember all the things that had happened before March, and all the novel ways we could still get together as a community.
